The Designer's Dilemma: Clients Want Stone Effects but Only Half the Budget — PU Stone Offers a Middle Ground

Interior designers often face a classic dilemma: the client shows a stone effect picture from the internet and says "I want exactly this look," but the budget they offer is only half of what is needed to achieve that effect. To make matters worse, projects often have tight schedules, weak structures, and construction teams with varying skill levels.

Insisting on natural stone means exceeding the budget, extending the construction period, and possibly being complained about by the client later due to efflorescence or color difference; abandoning the stone effect and using paint or wallpaper instead will greatly compromise the design, and designers themselves will not be satisfied.

Is there a middle way? This article records the experiences of an independent designer in two projects over the past two years: the first time he insisted on using natural stone, resulting in more trouble than it was worth; the second time he switched to PU Stone, which satisfied the client and made his work easier. His experience may provide some reference for you.

1.The First Choice — "Unexpected Troubles" Brought by Natural Stone

Chen Hao (a pseudonym), an independent designer in Hangzhou, received a catering project in 2024: a newly opened fusion restaurant in Xihu District with an area of about 120 square meters. The client hoped that the entrance and the bar background wall would present a "rough rock texture." Chen Hao recommended locally produced blue-gray rough stone, and the client was very satisfied after seeing the sample and agreed to the plan.

Problems began to emerge one after another during the construction phase:

Budget Overrun: The cost of natural stone materials was about 460 yuan per square meter, and the two walls totaling 32 square meters cost about 15,000 yuan. However, due to the heavy weight of the stone (about 35kg per square meter), the original wall needed steel structure reinforcement, adding an additional 18,000 yuan. The total cost of materials + reinforcement reached 33,000 yuan, nearly doubling the client's original budget.

Construction Delay: After the stone was transported from other places to Hangzhou, obvious color differences between batches were found. Chen Hao requested a replacement, which delayed the project by 5 days. A 7-day maintenance period was required after paving, extending the total construction period from the expected 12 days to 22 days. The restaurant's opening was delayed, and the client was very dissatisfied.

Effect Failure: After maintenance, many white efflorescence phenomena appeared on the wall. The construction team tried to clean it, but the effect was not ideal. The client said to Chen Hao to his face: "This is completely different from the sample we saw at the beginning."

Chen Hao later recalled: "Natural stone itself is not wrong, but it is not suitable for this project. Lightweight walls, short construction period, and limited budget — when these three conditions are combined, using real stone is a risk. The final efflorescence problem was actually predictable, but I was too insistent on my design obsession at that time."

This project made Chen Hao lose part of the final payment of the design fee, and also strained his relationship with that construction team.

2.The Second Choice — Why Switch to PU Stone

In early 2025, Chen Hao received another project: a boutique cafe in Binjiang District with an area of about 80 square meters. The client also required a "raw stone texture" background wall, but the budget was only 20,000 yuan (including materials and installation), and the construction period was required to be completed within 10 days.

Learning from the previous lesson, Chen Hao did not directly recommend natural stone this time. He began to study alternative solutions and learned about the PU stone products of Haining    Longtime Industry Co., Ltd. at a building materials exhibition. He took several samples and compared them side by side with natural stone:

Comparison Item

Natural Stone (Blue Slate)

PU Stone (Slate Imitation)

Visual Effect (2 Meters Away)

Naturally rough

Very similar, indistinguishable to ordinary clients

Touch

Cold and hard

Warm and slightly elastic

Weight

35kg/square meter

4.5kg/square meter

Material Unit Price

About 460 yuan/square meter

About 195 yuan/square meter

Installation Method

Wet construction + maintenance

Dry construction, no maintenance required

Color Difference Risk

Obvious between batches

Factory-controlled, ΔE ≤ 1.5

Efflorescence Risk

High

None (water absorption ≤ 0.3%)

Chen Hao also requested test reports from Longtime: GB 8624 Class B1 Flame Retardant, ISO 4892-3 UV Aging (color difference ΔE ≤ 2 after 1000h). These data dispelled his concerns about outdoor durability and fire safety.

He recommended the PU stone plan to the client, who agreed to use it after seeing the sample.

3.Project Details — "Yu" Cafe in Binjiang, Hangzhou

Project Information

  • Name: "Yu" Cafe, Binjiang, Hangzhou
  • Wall Location: Bar background wall (9 square meters) + Entrance curved wall (14 square meters) = 23 square meters
  • Selected Product: Longtime Slate Imitation Series (warm gray, outdoor coating version)

Procurement and Installation

The total cost was controlled within the client's budget (20,000 yuan), and actually used less than half. Construction period: installation completed in 3 days, no maintenance required, and normal business could start on the 4th day.

Effect and Follow-up Visit

The cafe opened in March 2025. Chen Hao conducted follow-up visits 1 month and 6 months after the opening:

  • Visual Effect: Under warm lighting, the wall presents a natural rock concave-convex texture and shadows. The store manager reported that "almost all customers think it is real stone."
  • Durability: After Hangzhou's plum rain season, the wall had no efflorescence, no discoloration, and no cracks.
  • Client Satisfaction: The client said "much better than expected" during acceptance and took the initiative to recommend Chen Hao to other merchants.

Chen Hao said: "This project made me sigh with relief. The client was satisfied, the budget was not exceeded, the construction period was not delayed, and I did not take the blame. This is the state that designers want."

Advice for Other Designers

Chen Hao said: "The quality of the design effect does not depend on how expensive the materials you use are, but on the final implemented result. Natural stone is of course more beautiful under ideal conditions, but in reality, most projects are not under ideal conditions. PU stone is a good 'safe bet' — it will not make your design reach the peak, but it can ensure no mistakes. And making mistakes is exactly the price that designers can least afford."

5.Summary — The Designer's Trade-off: Effect, Budget and Risk

The essence of a designer's work is trade-off. There is no absolute good or bad between natural stone and PU stone, only suitability.

When the budget is sufficient, the structure allows, and the construction period is loose, natural stone is still an irreplaceable classic material. But in reality, more and more commercial projects and old house renovations are facing: lightweight walls, short construction periods, and limited budgets. Under these conditions, PU stone provides a solution that balances effect and feasibility.

As a leading manufacturer of PU stone in China, Haining Longtime Industry Co., Ltd. can provide designers with:

  • More than 50 texture molds, covering common stone effects
  • Complete set of test reports
  • Sample delivery and installation technical guidance

If you are struggling with wall material selection for a project — wanting the effect but fearing the risks of natural stone — you may wish to contact Longtime to request samples and project cases. Place a piece of PU stone and a piece of real stone side by side, and let the client see and weigh them themselves. Many times, the answer will present itself in that moment.
