When renovating old stores or upgrading existing buildings, demolishing old walls is often the first major hurdle. Whether it’s breaking off old ceramic tiles, scraping off latex paint, or removing wood veneer, the process is accompanied by noise, dust, a large amount of construction waste, as well as considerable labor and waste disposal costs. The construction period can be as short as a few days or as long as one or two weeks, during which the store cannot operate normally and may even attract complaints from neighbors. Many owners delay renovation simply because they “can’t afford the demolition or wait for the construction period.”
In fact, many old walls do not need to be demolished. A material called PU stone can be directly pasted on the original ceramic tile, latex paint, or wood base, completely eliminating the demolition process.

1.Comparison Between Traditional Renovation and Direct PU Stone Installation
|
Type of Old Wall |
Traditional Method |
Method with PU Stone |
|
Ceramic Tile Wall |
Use an electric pick to break off the tiles and scrape down to the cement layer |
No tile breaking needed; directly install a base frame on the tiles and stick PU stone |
|
Latex Paint Wall |
Scrape off the old paint and putty layer, then re-level, apply putty, sand, and paint |
No wall scraping needed; as long as the wall does not peel, clean the dust and stick PU stone directly |
|
Wooden Wall/Wood Veneer |
Remove the old wooden boards, replace them with gypsum boards or cement boards as the base, then paste new materials |
No need to remove the wooden boards if they are firm; directly install a base frame and stick PU stone; reinforce simply if they are not firm |
|
Rental Store (Restoration Required Upon Move-Out) |
After demolition and renovation, the original state cannot be restored upon move-out, which may result in deductions from the landlord |
No damage to the original wall; remove PU stone and the base frame upon move-out, and the original wall remains intact |
It can be seen from the table that the biggest problem with traditional renovation is “demolition” – no matter what the original wall is, it is demolished first. The method with PU stone is “no demolition, just stick it on,” which saves not only demolition costs, but also waste disposal fees, construction period losses, and various troubles with neighbors and landlords.

2.Three Reasons Why PU Stone Can Be Directly Stuck on Old Walls
PU stone can achieve “no demolition, direct pasting” relying on three characteristics: light weight, thin thickness, and flexible installation method.
First, it is very light. The weight of PU stone is about one-twentieth of that of natural stone, only two to three kilograms per square meter. Such a light material can be fully supported by the old wall. Whether it is a ceramic tile surface, latex paint surface, or wood surface, as long as the wall itself has no hollowing, peeling, or severe loosening, PU stone can be directly installed on the wall. Unlike real stone, which weighs dozens or even hundreds of kilograms per square meter, the old wall cannot bear it at all, so the old surface must be scraped off and re-reinforced first.
Second, the installation method is flexible. PU stone uses a buckle or magnetic suction system, without the need for cement mortar or structural adhesive. Take magnetic suction as an example: first lay a thin metal base frame (only a few millimeters thick) on the old wall, then fix it with expansion screws. This base frame is very light and imposes almost no additional burden on the old wall. After the base frame is laid, the PU stone is directly adsorbed on it; if you want to change the position, you can peel it off and re-paste it, without damaging the original wall at all.
Third, PU stone has low requirements on the base. The ceramic tile surface does not need to be roughened, the latex paint surface does not need to be scraped off (as long as it does not peel), and the wood surface does not need to be removed. Before construction, you only need to clean the wall and handle the loose parts, then you can directly lay the base frame and paste the boards. The entire process is free of dust, noise, and a large amount of construction waste.

3.Real Case: A Café in Shanghai Renovated in Three Days
In 2025, there was a café that had been open for five or six years in Jing’an District, Shanghai. The owner wanted to upgrade its image. The store was not large, about 70 to 80 square meters, and the original wall was painted with gray latex paint. Some parts had turned yellow due to water vapor, and the corners were chipped. The owner wanted to create an industrial style effect of imitated red bricks on the wall to attract customers to take photos and check in.
After a decoration company came to inspect, the plan given was: scrape off the old latex paint, re-level, then paste imitated red brick cultural stone. The construction period would be at least two weeks, and during the wall scraping days, the noise and dust would be so great that the store could not operate normally. The owner calculated: closing for two weeks, paying rent and employees’ salaries as usual, resulting in a loss of hundreds of thousands of yuan in turnover. He hesitated.
Later, someone recommended the imitated red brick series of PU stone to him, saying that it did not require wall scraping, could be directly pasted on the old wall, and could be completed in three days. The owner was half-believing but willing to try.
The total area was about 60 square meters, and two workers finished all the pasting in three days. In the end, compared with the traditional plan, it saved more than ten days of construction period, as well as the costs of wall scraping and garbage disposal. After the renovation, the owner calculated: he saved hundreds of thousands of yuan in closure losses and two to three thousand yuan in garbage disposal fees, and the total investment in materials and labor was even lower than that of the traditional plan.
After the renovation, the café’s business improved a lot. Many customers specially sat in front of the red brick wall to take photos and post them on social media, and the owner himself thought it was worth it. Most importantly, the store was rented, and the lease still had two years left. The owner did not have to worry about restoration upon move-out – at that time, just remove the PU stone and the base frame, and the wall would still be the original latex paint, with no faults for the landlord to find.

4.Several Types of Old Walls Suitable for Direct PU Stone Installation
PU stone has good compatibility with the base, and the following common types of old walls can be constructed directly:
Old ceramic tile walls: As long as the tiles have no large-area hollowing or peeling, there is no need to break them; directly install a base frame and stick PU stone on them.
Latex paint walls: As long as they do not peel or powder, there is no need to scrape them off; construction can be carried out after cleaning the dust. Simply repair the local peeling parts.
Wooden walls or wood veneer: If the wooden boards themselves are firm, there is no need to remove them; directly install the base frame. If the wooden boards are not firm, reinforce them first and then lay the base frame.
Cement walls or roughcast walls: Even better, construction can be carried out directly.
Only one situation needs attention: the wall is severely damp, moldy, powdered, or has large-area hollowing and peeling. In this case, there is no need to demolish the entire wall, but the loose parts need to be scraped off first, then simply repaired and leveled, and then the base frame is laid. The workload of repair is much less than full scraping.

5.Summary
Many old store owners and managers of existing buildings have a calculation in their minds: they want to renovate but are afraid of the trouble. Demolition is expensive, garbage disposal is expensive, and the loss from closing the store is large. After careful calculation, they feel it is not cost-effective, so they make do year after year.
PU stone provides a new way: no demolition, just stick it on. Lightweight materials combined with magnetic suction or buckle installation make renovation as simple as pasting wallpaper, but the effect is three-dimensional, firm, and durable.
Not all renovations need to be drastic. Choose the right material, and old walls can directly “put on new clothes.” When running a store, time is money. The construction period saved from demolition is the extra turnover.
This type of PU stone is developed and produced by Haining longtime Industry Co., Ltd. With more than 20 years of experience in polyurethane materials, the company controls the entire chain from mold carving to formula deployment and surface coating. The products support customization according to drawings and color matching with Pantone color numbers. For all old wall renovation projects, free technical guidance and construction plan suggestions can be provided.
