PU Mushroom Stone: A Lightweight Solution for Antique Stone

   In exterior wall decoration, PU Stone is favored for European and pastoral styles due to its rough three-dimensional texture and natural edge stacking effect. Traditional natural mushroom stone is hewn from sandstone, featuring a strong texture but high weight, requiring wet pasting, which leads to a long construction period and high structural load. While retaining the original texture, PU Stone reduces its surface density to less than 1/6 of that of natural stone, and its installation is changed to a combination of bonding and anchoring, making it more lightweight and efficient.

1.Product Overview

   PU Mushroom Stone is a stone-imitating wall decorative panel with high-density rigid polyurethane as the base material and the surface treated with multiple layers of coating. Through a 1:1 precision mold replication process, the product obtains textures from the original natural mushroom stone—including raised mushroom caps, layered cleavage cracks, natural broken edges, and holes formed by long-term weathering. After molding, the three-dimensional sense of the panel is almost the same as that of natural mushroom stone, but the weight is significantly reduced.

   This product is mainly used for partial decoration of building facades, wall capitals, indoor background walls, and garden landscape retaining walls. Compared with natural mushroom stone, PU Mushroom Stone has no special load-bearing requirements on the base course, and can be directly pasted on concrete, brick walls, cement boards or old tile surfaces, suitable for new construction projects and renovation of old buildings.

   PU Mushroom Stone meets the B1-class fire protection standard and E0-class formaldehyde emission. Its closed-cell structure gives it waterproof and freeze-thaw resistance, and it can be used outdoors in most climatic regions.

   According to the product specification sheet, the main parameters of PU Mushroom Stone are as follows:

   Note: Model B series and J series represent different texture directions or edge treatment methods of mushroom stone; please refer to the physical sample for specific textures. The thickness of 80mm is the dimension from the highest point of the protrusion to the bottom of the panel. The actual base plate thickness is about 25–30mm, and the protrusion part is integrally formed in the mold.

3.Core Engineering Characteristics

3.1 Lightweight Advantage

   The bulk density of natural mushroom stone (such as blue sandstone) is about 2500 kg/m³. A 1200×600×80mm natural stone rough plate weighs about 144 kg, which usually requires mechanical hoisting or handling by multiple people. The weight of a PU Mushroom Stone panel of the same size is less than 8 kg, which can be easily operated by a single person. This feature directly reduces transportation costs and on-site labor costs, and also allows the base courses that could not bear the load of stone, such as light steel keel partition walls and old brick-concrete structures, to use this product.

3.2 High-Precision Texture Replication

   The mold of PU Mushroom Stone is replicated from natural raw stone, with a texture precision of micron level. The mold material is high-temperature resistant silica gel or metal, which can completely replicate every protrusion, pit and cleavage crack on the surface of the raw stone. During production, the polyurethane raw material is foamed and solidified in the mold, and a three-dimensional surface identical to natural stone is obtained after demolding. The products produced in batches have good texture consistency, without the inevitable color difference and shape deviation of natural stone, which is conducive to effect control during large-area paving.

3.3 Weather Resistance and Fire Performance

   The surface coating system includes UV-resistant protective topcoat and elastic EVA coloring layer. After 1000 hours of QUV accelerated aging test, the color difference ΔE < 2, with no obvious chalking. The water absorption rate of the closed-cell polyurethane base material is less than 1%, and there is no cracking or peeling after freeze-thaw cycle test (-20℃ to +20℃, 50 times). The material is Class B1 flame-retardant, self-extinguishing when away from fire, and no dripping when burning, complying with the fire protection specifications for building exterior wall decorative materials.

3.4 Installation Efficiency

   Natural mushroom stone is generally pasted with cement mortar wet. Each stone needs to be plastered on the back, mounted on the wall, leveled and maintained. Due to its heavy weight, only 1-2 courses can be built at a time. PU Mushroom Stone is pasted with structural adhesive, supplemented by stainless steel screw anchoring, without waiting for the mortar to harden, and the entire wall can be paved continuously. For the same area of wall, natural stone takes about 10 working days, while PU Mushroom Stone can usually be completed in 3 working days.

   PU Mushroom Stone is recommended for the following project types:

• Exterior walls of villas and low-rise residential buildings: Especially suitable for partial decoration of skirting, wall corners, porch columns and other parts, creating a natural and simple architectural style.
• Commercial space facades: Resorts, homestays, farmhouses, golf clubs and other places pursuing a close-to-nature atmosphere.
• Walls and landscape retaining walls: The rough texture of mushroom stone matches well with garden plants, and PU material will not delaminate and peel due to freeze-thaw like natural stone.
• Indoor feature walls: Fireplace walls, bar counter background walls, living room TV background walls and other positions that need a three-dimensional stone sense but do not want to occupy too much indoor space (PU Mushroom Stone is 80mm thick, much thinner than natural stone).
• Renovation of old buildings: It can be directly covered on the original tiles, water-washed stone or cement mortar surface, eliminating the process of chiseling the old surface layer.

   Not recommended for: Floor paving (uneven surface is easy to trip and not wear-resistant), long-term water accumulation or tidal areas (such as the underwater part of swimming pools).
