PS Wall Panels and Renting: Three Moves, Three Times the Panels Came With Me

Renters know this truth best: the house belongs to someone else, but your life is yours.

Every time I wanted to make my rented place look better, I was stopped by the same worries: “no drilling,” “no damaging the walls,” “restore everything when you leave.” Then I discovered PS wall panels – more precisely, I discovered the “removable installation” trick.

Three moves in three years, and those panels followed me everywhere. Here’s my experience.

First time: Cautious, like sneaking

My first rental had those old white latex walls – even rubbing them felt risky. I read online that you can use “removable nano tape” with PS panels instead of silicone adhesive – peel off the whole panel when you move out.

Skeptical, I tried it. I stuck about a dozen strips of removable tape on the back of a panel, pressed it onto the wall, and leveled it. I didn’t dare do a large area – just the wall behind my bed, about two square meters.

Lived there for over half a year. The panel never fell off. When I moved out, I slowly peeled it from a corner – the tape came off with the panel, leaving the wall perfectly clean, not a single mark. The landlord didn’t even notice that wall had ever been covered.

Second time: More confident – did a whole TV feature wall

The second apartment was larger, with a blank living room wall. I bought more panels, planning to cover the entire TV wall. Still using removable tape, but this time I applied more strips – about a dozen per panel.

Lived there nearly a year. At some point, a friend’s kid kicked one panel, leaving a small dent. I didn’t mind – the panels were mine anyway, I’d take them with me. When I moved out, peeling off the whole wall took over an hour. The wall underneath was still flawless.

This time I learned a trick: a couple of days before moving out, warm the tape edges with a hair dryer – the adhesive softens and the tape peels off much easier.

Third time: Actually asked the landlord – he said “go ahead”

When I viewed my current place, I told the landlord upfront: “I want to put PS panels on the living room and bedroom walls. They won’t damage the walls, and I’ll restore everything when I leave.” He hesitated. I offered to show him the panels and tape, and write it into the lease.

He agreed.

This time I went all out. The sofa wall in the living room, the headboard wall in the bedroom, even behind the kitchen cooktop – all covered. I’ve lived here over a year and a half now, and the place feels much nicer. The landlord comes by occasionally to collect fees – he’s seen it and never said a word.

Practical tips for using PS panels in a rental

What tape should you use?

Search for “removable nano tape” or “no-damage mounting tape.” Don’t buy the ultra-cheap rolls – they won’t hold. Mid-range with good reviews is fine. If you’re unsure, buy a small roll first, test it on a small spot for 24 hours, and see if it leaves residue.

Which walls won’t work?

  • Walls that are sandy or peeling (tape won’t stick)
  • Wallpapered walls (tape will tear the paper)
  • Damp or leaking walls (tape will lose adhesion)

Most standard latex-painted walls work fine.

What thickness of panels?

2mm is lightest – tape holds easily. 3mm also works but needs more tape. 5mm is too heavy – not recommended.

How to clean up when moving out?

After peeling off the panels, if any tape residue remains, remove it with an eraser or a little rubbing alcohol (test an inconspicuous spot first). Never scrape with a blade.

What if the landlord says no?

Don’t force it. You could ask if permanent silicone adhesive is allowed, and offer to pay for wall repairs when you leave. Or use “movable panels” – attach the panels to a lightweight wooden frame and hang it like a large picture. That’s not “wall installation.”

Honest opinion

PS panels aren’t the only option for rental makeovers, but they’re the most hassle-free I’ve used. Inexpensive, wall-friendly, easy to install yourself, and you can take them when you leave. It’s the best illustration of “the house is rented, but your life isn’t.”

Three moves in four years, those panels followed me from one place to another. Each time I peeled them off and stuck them back on – like old friends.

I’ll bring them to my next place too.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Where is your factory located?
A: No. 10-1 Lianhong Road, Yuanhua Town, Haining City, Zhejiang Province, China.

Q2: Does removable tape really not damage the wall?
Good removable tape leaves no residue and doesn’t peel paint on standard latex walls. But if the original paint is already chalking or flaking, any tape will pull some off.

Q3: Is it expensive to use PS panels in a rental?
No. A headboard wall costs very little. And you can reuse them – after three moves, the cost per use is negligible.

Q4: Will the panels deform after repeated peeling and re-sticking?
2mm panels are flexible but won’t deform with normal handling. Just don’t fold them or step on them.

Q5: How should I write it into the lease if the landlord asks?
Example: “The tenant may install removable decorative panels on the walls using removable adhesive tape that does not damage the wall surface. Upon moving out, the tenant will remove the panels and restore the walls to their original clean condition. Any residual adhesive marks will be cleaned by the tenant.”

Q6: I rent. Can you pre-cut the panels to my size?
Yes. Give us the dimensions and we’ll cut them before shipping. You receive ready-to-install panels – no cutting yourself.
