It all started with an email in November last year.
Our (Haining Longtime Industry Co., Ltd.) export team received an inquiry from James, an Australian architect. The subject line was direct: "Stone look without the stone weight – need something light for a heritage facade." He attached more than a dozen photos: a Federation-style villa on Sydney's North Shore, its exterior originally clad in natural stone. But after decades of sun and rain, some sections had weathered and cracked, and a few stones were even at risk of loosening and falling off. To make things worse, the house sat on a hillside where heavy lifting equipment couldn't access.
James wrote in the email: "The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, want to keep the traditional stone appearance, but natural stone is too heavy – we can't reinforce the foundation. Aluminum panels are too modern and completely out of character with this street. Is there something that looks like stone but is light enough for one person to carry?"
After reading the email, I knew exactly what the Thompsons were up against. For heritage-listed homes in Australia, exterior facade renovation options are actually very limited. James later told me that he had drawn up a simple table for the Thompsons, laying out the pitfalls of each option upfront:
| Material Option | The Thompsons' Concern | James's Field Experience |
| Natural stone (sandstone/bluestone) | Original stone already cracked, don't want the same problem again | 20-40 kg/m², impossible to install on hillside, foundation can't support it |
| Aluminum panel (stone coating) | Too modern, doesn't match a century-old house | Metallic feel is too cold, heritage authority may not approve |
| Fiber cement board (stone texture) | Looks okay from afar, like a print up close | Surface texture is pressed flat, lacks three-dimensionality |
| PU stone (polyurethane imitation stone) | Sounds like plastic, worried it won't look like real stone | James had no prior experience with it |
In other words, before contacting us, the Thompsons had already looked into every mainstream option and reached the same conclusion: either it's too heavy to install, or the texture is wrong, or both. James's email carried a sense of "one last decision to make."

Samples, Doubts, and a Video
We sent James samples of our LT-PU-Stone series, slate texture in dark grey, size 600×1200mm. A week later, he messaged us saying the Thompsons had placed the samples next to the stone path in their garden, comparing them side by side with real stone for an entire day. They even tapped them lightly with a hammer to test strength – James's words: "They wanted to confirm this stuff wouldn't break at the first touch."
Robert's exact words, relayed through James: "The texture feels similar to real stone, and the cross-section looks very natural. But it's not real stone after all. Can you guarantee it won't crack in ten years?"
Facing this very practical question, we didn't send a lab report. Instead, we pulled a real installation video from our factory archive – the same series of PU stone installed in 2018 on a seaside holiday home in Cornwall, UK, shot in October 2024, six years after installation. The wall color had mellowed slightly compared to new, but the stone texture was intact. No cracking, no peeling, and the grout in the joints remained solid.
Robert's response: "Alright, that looks like the real deal. Let's do it." We all breathed a sigh of relief on our end.

An Incident That Surprised James During Installation
The Thompson house had 65 square meters of exterior wall. James's crew planned to finish in four days. Here's the actual timeline:
| Day | Work Content | Time / Notes |
| Day 1 | Remove weathered natural stone, inspect wall moisture barrier, repair substrate | Completed as planned; removal went smoother than expected |
| Days 2 | Install timber furring strips for leveling, lay moisture barrier, begin PU stone installation | Ahead of schedule – one person installed about 20㎡ in a day |
| Day 3 | Installation nearly complete, install corner trims | All smooth |
| Day 4 | Grouting, surface cleaning, final walkthrough | Passed – the whole street came to watch |
James called us on the evening of Day 2, sounding surprised: "This stuff goes up way too fast. My guys expected to level each piece one by one like real stone and wait for cement to dry. Instead, just apply structural adhesive, press it onto the wall, and it's done. One person installed 20 square meters in a day. At this rate, I feel like I overcharged on labor."
PU stone installation is indeed simple. No cladding system, no welded framework, no waiting for cement mortar to dry. Just apply structural adhesive in dots on the back of the PU stone on a flat substrate, and press it onto the wall. One person can handle the entire job. Where natural stone typically takes 5-7 working days, a PU stone project usually takes just 1-2 days.
After completion, the Thompsons stood across the street and looked at their house for a long time. A neighbor stopped by and asked: "What kind of stone is this? It looks almost identical to the original, but so much newer." Robert smiled and replied: "It's not stone. It's PU stone. If you want the link, I'll send it to you."

What Exactly Were the Specs of the PU Stone They Chose?
The model is our LT-PU-Stone slate series. When communicating with James, I didn't bombard him with spreadsheets. Instead, I picked four points most relevant to his project and explained them in plain language:
- Weight: only 3-5 kg per square meter.Natural stone weighs 15-20 kg per square meter – PU stone is only one-fourth to one-fifth the weight. The Thompsons' house is on a hillside where heavy equipment can't access. This weight means one person can carry and install it without any mechanical assistance.
- Texture source: molded directly from real stone. Our molds are taken directly from natural stone. Every piece of PU stone replicates the texture of real stone – rough fractured surfaces and three-dimensional grain, not a printed image.
- Weather resistance: 6 years of real-world validation. That video from Cornwall we sent James was the best proof – 6 years of sea breeze, rain, and sun, with no cracking and no peeling. Outdoor-grade PU stone has additional UV-resistant coating and weather-resistant treatment, resisting acids, sun, and UV.
- Fire and water resistance: B1 grade flame retardant + waterproof coating.PU stone is flame-retardant treated and self-extinguishing away from fire. The surface has a waterproof coating – non-absorbent, non-molding, non-corroding.
Full specifications are as follows:
| Parameter | Value | Plain English Translation |
| Material | High-density polyurethane (PU) | Not foam, it's rigid polyurethane |
| Standard sizes | 600×1200mm / 600×600mm | Large panels, fewer joints |
| Thickness | 30-100mm | Different thicknesses for different stone effects |
| Unit weight | Approx. 3-5 kg/m² | Only a quarter the weight of real stone |
| Texture source | Molded from natural stone | Every texture comes from real stone |
| Installation method | Structural adhesive bonding | No cement, no cladding system |
| 24h water absorption | ≤0.5% | Won't absorb water, won't rot or mold |
| Fire rating | B1 grade, self-extinguishing | Cigarette butts and sparks won't ignite it |
| UV resistance (outdoor grade) | UV coating + weather-resistant treatment | No significant fading under sun exposure |
| Factory warranty | 10 years (non-load-bearing walls) | Longer than most people stay in one house |
Three Exterior Wall Options – A Total Cost Breakdown
James later told me that the Thompsons' final decision wasn't because of any single impressive parameter. It was because they did the math on all three options:
| Comparison | Haining Longtime PU Stone | Natural Stone (Sandstone/Bluestone) | Fiber Cement Board (Stone Coating) |
| Weight (kg/m²) | 3-5 | 15-20 | 15-25 |
| Texture realism | Molded from real stone, 3D texture | Natural, unique | Pressed print, flat up close |
| Tactile feel | Warm, sandy texture | Cold and hard | Cold and hard, hollow sound |
| Installation method | Adhesive bonding, one-person operation | Cladding/wet set, requires machinery | Nailed, heavy dust during cutting |
| Construction time (65m²) | 3-4 days | 7-10 days | 5-7 days |
| 20-year maintenance cost | Almost zero | Requires periodic sealing | Requires recoating every 5-8 years |
| Best for | Owners who want stone texture but can't use real stone | Owners with ample budget seeking ultimate quality | Projects accepting periodic maintenance |
James's exact words: "PU stone achieves 'looks like stone' and 'actually installable' at the same time. That's exactly what the Thompsons wanted – something that looks like every other old house on this street, without worrying about stones falling off and hurting someone."
Robert Sent a Text Message Later
In April this year, as autumn arrived in Sydney, Robert sent a text message with a photo of himself standing in front of the new wall: "Every neighbor on the street has asked me what this material is. Three of them already took your sample. You should send me a commission."
For those of us in building materials export, receiving a message like this feels better than getting an order.
It also confirmed one thing for us: in places where natural stone simply can't be installed – heritage areas, hillsides, lightweight structures – the real value of PU stone isn't that it's "cheap." It's that it turns "stone texture" from impossible into possible.
